Let's take a look at performance of Punjab Kings.
1st Match - PBKS vs RR (PBKS won by 4 runs ) - Playing at wankhede they made a huge score of 221 against RR. Rahul and Deepak Hooda played really well. But with the brilliance of Sanju Samson, RR reached very near to the target. But at last PBKS ended up winning it by 4 runs.
2nd Match- PBKS vs CSK (CSK won by 6 wickets and 26 balls left) - Batting Collapsed.
3rd Match- PBKS vs DC ( DC won by 6 wickets with 10 balls left) - PBKS batting 1st not scored enough runs to win.
4th Match- PBKS vs SRH (SRH won by 9 wickets and 8 balls left) - Batting collapsed.
5th Match - PBKS vs MI (PBKS won by 9 wickets and 14 balls left) - Bowlers performed and Rahul and Gayle chased down the target unbeaten.
6th Match- PBKS vs KKR ( KKR won by 5 wickets and 20 balls left) - Again the batting collapsed.
Similarities in wins
- In the two matches they won, Rahul performed brilliantly.
- Gayle scored 40 or more runs.
Similarities in losses.
- 4 out of 5 matches they lost batting 1st. They won against MI where they batted 2nd.
- In all the matches they lost their batting was an issue.
Reason
The foremost reason is their batting. Their Batting either collapsed or not put enough score on the board. One important thing needs to be considered is that they batted in 1st innings in the 4 losses. This means that someone at the top is not able to access the conditions properly and find a suitable target for the opposition. Moreover, they clearly lack experience in middle order with the presence of Nicolas Pooran, Deepak Hooda and Sharukh Khan. Lack of experience in middle order and failure of someone at the top in accessing the conditions are two reasons why they end up getting collapsed or failing to put enough runs on the board in the 4 occasions where they batted 1st and lost.
"Right now it looks 10-15 runs short, but I think 190-odd looked good. Me and Mayank thought 180-190 would have been great on this wicket." Rahul said after the match against DC.
In this match against DC, 1st wicket fell at 122 at 12.4 overs. The way Rahul and Mayank were playing they should have thought to score more than 210.This clearly shows that they were not able to access the conditions.
Now take a look at the playing 11 they played at the three different venues -
Mumbai - They went up with 5 complete bowlers with Deepak Hooda as 6th bowling option and Jhye Richardson batting at No.7.
Chennai- They went with up 3 complete bowlers in the form of Shami, Arshdeep and Ravi Bishnoi and played Fabian Allen, Moises Henriques and Deepak Hooda as 4th, 5th and 6th bowling options.
Ahmedabad- They went up with 4 complete bowlers in the form of Shami, Arshdeep, Jordan and Ravi Bishnoi. Moises Henriques was the 5th bowler and Deepak Hooda was 6th bowling option.
In all these playing 11 at different venues they lacked a clear balance. They need bowling all rounders in their team who can bat at 7 and can bowl 3-4 overs. Apart from this they have only Moises Henriques who can be their 6th bowling option. According to me, Deepak Hooda is not an appropriate 6th bowling option in a t20 match.

What they can do now ?
As per me, if they are playing Gayle they need to make him open the innings and Mayank Agarwal at No.3 will give stability in the team. At no.4 they need to persist with Deepak Hooda. We all know that Gayle on his given day can win them matches single handedly. But if Gayle fails then they have Mayank at 3 who can control the innings. Kl Rahul is an experienced guy, he needs to access the conditions from top. Nicholas Pooran's form is a matter of concern for them. They need to persist with him. Sharukh Khan has till now shown some glimpses of what he can do. At no.7 they do not have lots of options. Currently they are going with Moises Henriques which is not an appropriate option. They may play Fabian Allen at No.7 or they can look for a pure bowler in the form of Jhye Richardson and Chris Jordan. Jalaj Saxena is another option. But for me if they are playing their matches in Bengaluru then they need to play with the pure bowler at no.7 and 8 in the form of Chris Jordan and Jhye Richardson respectively. Then they have Shami, Arshdeep and Bishnoi who have performed well so far.
Lack of a good allrounder is a concern for PBKS this year. This is the reason why they are not getting the right balance in the team.
I believe that they will chase down the target better than puting runs on the board.
